No hace falta decir que COVID-19 ha tenido un gran impacto en nuestras vidas. Tampoco no es sorprendente decirles que MI Voz también ha sido afectado. Aunque hemos cancelado varios de nuestros talleres públicos, estamos comprometidos a adaptarnos a esta crisis de manera creativa y para poder apoyar a nuestra comunidad.
It goes without saying that COVID-19 has impacted so much of our day-to-day lives; it’s no surprise that MI Voz is impacted as well. Although we’ve cancelled several of our in-person workshops, we are determined to adapt to this crisis in ways that creatively support our community.

En anticipación de la elección de 2020, “MI Voz” es una serie de talleres de cartoneras con la gente latina de Michigan. El proyecto explora la pregunta ¿“qué es mi poder político”? Participantes le responderán esta pregunta por haciendo libros cartoneros de materiales originales y preexistentes. Este proceso contratarán creativamente sus propias ideas de poder político, justicia social, y reforma institutional.
En la tradición de cartoneras latinoamericanas, los libros de los participantes será atados con portadas de cartón. Este forma de libro históricamente hace los procesos de publicar y distribuir más accesible. Las cartoneras hacen para “MI Voz” será incluidas en este sitio, aumentando el alcance y el impacto del proyecto más allá de los talleres físicos.
In anticipation of the 2020 election, “MI Voz” is a yearlong series of cartonera workshops with Michigan’s Latinx community exploring the question “what is my political power?”. Participants will answer this question by compiling books of original and sampled materials, creatively engaging their own and others' ideas of political power, social justice, and institutional reform.
Participants’ books will be bound with cardboard covers, alluding to the tradition of Latin American cartoneras, a book form that makes publishing and distribution more accessible. Cartoneras made for "MI Voz" will be added to this site, increasing the reach and impact of the project beyond the physical workshops.
En 2016, sólo .2%, el estado de Michigan votó por Donald J. Trump, un hombre cuya plataforma tolerada racismo y discriminación hacia grupos marginalizados en los estados unidos, incluyendo la gente latina. Pew Research estima que 32 millones latinos en los estados unidos son elegibles para votar en 2020, desde 27.2 millones en 2016. Este es más que un aumento de 18%. Acercamiento, Michigan sentirá este crecimiento. In 2016, by just .2%, the state of Michigan voted to elect into office Donald J. Trump, a man whose platform openly condoned racism and discrimination towards a number of America’s marginalized groups, including Latinx. As the 2020 election looms, I find myself contemplating the Latinx political power in Michigan. Pew Research estimates that 32 million Latinx in the United States are eligible to vote in 2020, up from 27.2 million in 2016. That’s more than an 18% increase. Zooming in, Michigan will feel that growth.
Equis Research, a research group dedicated to “creating a better understanding of the latinx electorate”, states that Michigan is a battleground state where “Latinx population can tilt the election”. All of this is to say that Michigan’s Latinx population has a profound political power–MI Voz has the potential to stoke it.
